Leap Year

On Tuesday, January 26, 2010, I went to see the film Leap Year, featuring Amy Adams and Matthew Goode.

This movie is about Amy Adams' character, Anna Brady who is tired of waiting for her current boyfriend, Jeremy - played by Adam Scott, to propose to her. She finally gets some news from her friend saying that Jeremy was seen coming out of a jewelry store and that only means one thing, that their proposal was imminent.

However, she was disappointed that evening when Jeremy gives her a pair of earrings. So, she decides to take matters in her own hands... According to an Irish tradition, a woman can propose to a man on February 29, a chance for women every four years... Since Jeremy just happens to be in Ireland for a conference, she thought that it would be a perfect way to do it!

On her way however, her plane gets redirected to Wales because of bad weather and she has to try to find her way to Ireland and to Jeremy. This is where Matthew Goode's character, Declan, comes in... She hires a taxi, which happens to be him, to drive her to Dublin.

I won't go into more details here, because I may give the movie away. Perhaps a bit predictable, but it was a funny movie that makes you feel warm inside. Well, I thought like that anyway. I really enjoyed it and I am thinking that this film may be added to my collection. However, I am a sucker for films like this.

My favourite Thai restaurant

It's an unfortunate thing, this inflation business. I know that this is how the world works, however, as I said before, what worries me is that the inflation rate is not the same as the rate that companies give their employees as a raise...

My favourite Thai restaurant in St. Henri, Mak Mak, changed its menu recently. When I went today, the menu was different. The prices had gone up...

Now, I know that this is part of every business and inflation and the like... However, I think the increases were a bit steep:

The Large Tom Yom Soup is not so bad... It used to be $8.50. It is now $8.78. The percentage increase there is: 3.29%. That's not so bad... However, the thing is now if you want to change the meat (or add a meat) of shrimp, pork or tofu, it's an extra $0.75. With this change, it's now $9.53. The percentage increase is now: 12.12%...

And it doesn't stop there... Take the staple Pad thai, for example. It used to be $8.50, meat included... Now, it's $8.00 for the pad thai, but now it only includes, the noodles, egg, bean sprouts... Nothing else... You have to add your choice of protein to it... So, for example, if you wanted a chicken pad thai: It would be $8.00 for the pad thai and then $1.38 for the chicken. So... The new total is $9.38. This is an increase of 10.35%... If you wanted shrimp, pork or beef, you have to add $1.88... That would mean that your new total is $9.88. So... This would be a percentage increase of 16.23%.

These are humongous price increases... When he told me that he would be increasing the prices a little bit, I was not expecting this margin of increase...

Did You Hear About The Morgans?

On Tuesday, January 19, 2010, I went to see the movie Did You Hear About The Morgans? The two main stars were Sarah Jessica Parker and Hugh Grant.

The story is about Paul Morgan and Meryl Morgan... They are going through a separation but Paul was trying to make amends... A dinner to talk ended with both of them witnessing a murder. They were the only witnesses to the crime so they had to enter the Witness Protection and Relocation service...

They get relocated to the town of Ray, Wyoming and then hilarity ensues from there.

There is also the possibility of them rediscovering their love for each other...

Not the best movie that was made, but it was funny and light.

The Princess and The Frog

On Tuesday, January 12, 2010, I went to see the movie The Princess and The Frog, Disney's latest animation masterpiece.

This story is based on the story of The Princess and the Frog, where a frog who is actually a prince kisses a princess so that he can regain his human form. However, in this film, there was a small mistake that was made and the prince therefore doesn't regain his human form... In fact, he drags a human down with him to become a frog!

Then we have the hilarious adventure of the two of them trying to get back into their human form.

I really enjoyed this film. It was a typical Disney film, what can I say? I enjoyed it though. I think it was neat for the movie to be set in New Orleans. This time around, I thought the villain was scarier than the other villains in the other Disney films. Perhaps I haven't seen many princess films though.

What happens at the end? You'll have to watch the film to find out.

Alvin & The Chipmunks the Squeakquel

On Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2010, I went to see the movie Alvin & The Chipmunks the Squeakquel.

This is the second movie to the first one that came out in 2007 where the singing sensation, The Chipmunks, were discovered.

This time around, three female chipmunks have found their way to the Ian, the former manager. They want to meet Alvin and The Chipmunks, but Ian, seeing their potential lies to them about the Alvin in hopes to dupe them and then make lots of money!

There was definitely not much story line to this film, as it is a children's movie, but it was well written and the jokes were funny.

The Chipmunks get shipped to school, so they experience first hand what high school is like... Dave had an accident at the beginning of the show. Certain lessons are learnt during the movie, especially by Alvin.

A fun cartoon/kids movies for familities.
