The Help
On Saturday, October 8, 2011 I went to see the movie The Help. This movie features Jessica Chastain, Bryce Dallas Howard and Emma Stone. There are many others that are well known, but these three are the ones that have been in movies recently.
The story is based on a book and it's about an aspiring writer who decides to write what she is passionate about. She publishes a book from the point of the view of the help, the African-American maids and the hardships that they have to endure.
The story takes place in Jackson, Mississippi. We see that the wealthy white folks hire the African-American maids to work in their houses, to raise their children, but they still get treated like second class citizens.
Holly Hollbrook, a local, wants to draft the home sanitation initiative, where each house with coloured help would be required to build a separate toilet. This causes a lot of discomfort for many of the maids, but they do not say anything... The main character of the movie, Skeeter, wants to tell the story about the unjust treatment of these people so she tries to interview a few maids.
Does she succeed? What happens in the movie? You'll have to see the movie to find out.
I know that there is a book, but I haven't had a chance to read it. I wouldn't be able to tell you if it's better than the book.
