Ruby Sparks

On Tuesday, August 28, 2012, I went to see the movie Ruby Sparks.  This movie features Annette Benning, Antonio Banderas and Paul Dano.

Paul Dano's character, Calvin Weir-Fields, is a struggling writer, since he's suffering from writer's block.  He also has a difficult time with finding friends and meeting new people.  He dreams of a girl and decides to write about her on his typewriter.  All of a sudden, this girl comes to life!

This girl who comes to life, her name is Ruby Sparks and it's everything that he imagines to be.  He controls everything that she does...  Which is cool, right?

Well, watch this movie and you'll discover the pros and cons of such a situation.  It was a nicely done movie with moments that made you laugh and moments that made you think and reflect.

This is a movie that is worth your time and your money in the cinema.

Hope Springs

On Tuesday, August 21, 2012, I went to see the movie Hope Springs featuring Meryl Streep and Tommy Lee Jones.

The movie is about a couple who's been married for 31 years.  Kay and Arnold.  Kay, played by Streep, is a salesperson at a women's clothing boutique while Arnold, played by Jones, is a major partner in a firm for taxes.

Kay is relatively unhappy about the routine that is her marriage.  They are no longer intimate.  In fact, they don't even sleep in the same bed anymore.  So, she decides that she wants to go to couples counselling because she would like to feel like she did when she was 22, which was when she got married to Arnold.

At first, Arnold is reluctant to go, but he tags along and the two of them meet Dr. Feld, an intense couples counsellor, played by Steve Carrell.  His office is in Hope Springs.

What happens in the movie?  You'll have to watch to find out.  A great performance by Streep as well as Jones.  A great comedy/date movie/romantic comedy.

Total Recall (2012)

On Tuesday, August 14, 2012, I went to see the movie Total Recall.  This is the "remake" featuring Colin Farrell, Kate Beckinsale, Jessica Biel and Bill Nighy.

This movie is about Douglas Quaid (played by Farrell), who's a factory worker.  He lives in The Colony, which is Australia after the global nuclear war, and he commutes to the UFB.  He goes to Rekall after work one night, to have some fun and get away with some fake memories.  However, something goes wrong and he becomes a super spy.

It turns out that Quaid is actually an agent by the name of Hauser.  And his wife is actually an agent as well who is keeping an eye on him.

This movie is very different than the Total Recall that had Arnold Swarzenagger and Sharon Stone in it.  There are certain elements that are found in both movies, but the actual movies itself are very different.  After all, both stories are just based on the short story by Philip K. Dick.

What happens in this movie?  You'll have to see it to find out.  A definitely worthwhile watch.  Lots of action scenes and they were very well done.

Ted

On Tuesday, August 7, 2012, I went to see the movie Ted.  This is the movie that Seth MacFarlene directed featuring himself as the voice of the teddy bear.

The story is about John Bennett, played by Mark Wahlberg, who was not a popular kid during his childhood.  In fact, he had a really difficult time making friends...  So, he wishes that a teddy bear that he got one Christmas would become alive so that he could have a friend.

That magically happens and John had a teddy bear friend that was beside him all throughout his childhood.  Now, John has grown up.  He's 35 years old and he has a girlfriend of four years, Lori Collins, who was played by Mila Kunis.

After a series of hooligans, Lori essentially gets fed up and asks John to grow up.  However, his attachment to his buddy, Ted, is still quite strong and kind of gets in the way.  So, the major story is about Ted not being able to let go of his gift and his love for the girlfriend.

There are other characters and subplots that get in the way of the story.  I will not list them here.  So, you'll have to watch the movie to find out what they are.

Many people who are involved with the Family Guy team are in this movie.  Alex Borstein plays John's mother when he was young, Mila Kunis plays a major character, Patrick Warburton, who plays a minor character (he does the voice of Joe),  Ralph Garman.  There were many people in this movie who made appearances/cameos.  Ryan Reynolds was one and Norah Jones was another.

This was not the best movie ever shot, it probably won't win any Oscars.  However, it is a really funny movie (slapstick humour, I guess) and I really enjoyed it.
