Belle

On Tuesday, June 24, 2014, I went to see the movie Belle, featuring Matthew Goode, Tom Wilkinson, Emily Watson, and Penelope Wilton.  The movie is based on the real-life story of Dido Elizabeth Belle, who was an illegitimate mulatto child that was born.  Because of her unique situation, she cannot dine with her family, as she is not considered truly white, but she is too high in rank to dine with the servants.

The movie also treats the story of the progression of slavery in England as well as the historical Zonk case.  A movie that was very well directed and the acting was extremely well done.

Chef

On Tuesday, June 10, 2014, I went to see the movie Chef featuring John Favreau, Sofia Vergara, Robert Downey Jr., Dustin Hoffman, Scarlett Johansson and a few other stars.

This movie is about Chef Carl Casper (Jon Favreau), who is working in a restaurant.  There's a big food critic that's going to be coming to rate the food and the restaurant that night, so he was busy working on a new menu.

However, the owner of the menu, Dustin Hoffman, does not think that Carl Casper's menu would be good for the restaurant so he demands that the menu that hasn't changed for ten years be made.

Of course, since Casper doesn't get to make the menu he wants, he does not get a glowing review for himself or the food...  And walks right into a twitter war...  After Carl Casper signs up for a twitter account, he sends the reviewer a comment on twitter, thinking that it's a private message, but it ended up being visible to everyone in cyberspace.  This leads to a second "invitation" to the same restaurant, where Casper promises a different menu.  This time around, he is stopped again because the menu is "at capacity" with lots of reservations.  Casper quits and when he sees the food critic's comment, he storms into the restaurant and has a meltdown where people film him and put him on Youtube.

To find some piece of mind, he decides to relax, take some time off, get to know his son better and decides to launch into a food truck business.

What happens after that?  You'll have to watch the movie to find out.

The Grand Seduction

On Tuesday, June 3, 2014, I went to see the movie The Grand Seduction, featuring Brandon Gleeson and Taylor Kitsch.

This movie is based upon the Quebecois version of La grande séduction, where a small town tries to seduce a doctor into staying there and setting up practice.  In this version, the small town of Pickle Cove is trying to convince Dr. Lewis (Taylor Kitsch) to stay there as a full-time doctor.  That way, they can bring work to the harbour and people won't have to live off of welfare cheques.

I have not seen the original, made in 2003, but if this remake is as good as the original, then both are worth it.

And Taylor Kitsch actually looks good in this movie...
