Labyrinth of Lies

On Tuesday, October 27, 2015, I went to see the movie Labyrinth of Lies, which is a German film that talked about the trials after the war, where they arrested and trialed Germans who were part of the SS and were at Auschwitz, and who committed war crimes (murders in particular).

This film, however, touches so many other issues...  Like Germany just post war.  They just kept on living their lives and no one actually talked about the truth...  What the Nazis actually did...

A really powerful movie that is worth seeing!  I really enjoyed it!

Pan

On Tuesday, October 20, 2015, I went to see the movie Pan, featuring Hugh Jackman, Garrett Hedlund, Levi Miller, Rooney Mara and Amanda Seyfried.

The story is done in the style of a pre-tale to the modern story of Peter Pan and Hook.  Of course, in this movie, the bad guy was Blackbeard, played by Hugh Jackman and Hook, played by Garrett Hedlund), and Pan, played by Levi Miller, are still friends.

The story is about Blackbeard's quest for fairy dust, because it keeps him forever young.  He mines for it in his part of the island, but his supplies are dwindling.  He goes and captures orphans to become miners of the fairy dust crystals.

Peter finds some, but another miner takes credit for his work.  When he tries to stand up for himself, he gets framed and Blackbeard sends him to walk the plank...  And when Peter is pushed off the plank, he starts to fall and ends up flying!  Then we start with the prophecy about how this kid that flies is the one who will defeat Blackbeard with the fairy people.

What happens in the end?  You'll have to watch the movie to find out...

Coming Home

On Tuesday, October 13, 2015, I went to see the movie Coming Home (Gui Lai), featuring Gong Li.  The movie is about Feng Wanyu, played by Li, who was a mother raising a daughter Dandan (played by Huiwen Zhang), during the Cultural Revolution.  Her husband, Lu Yanshi (played by Daoming Chen) was captured as a political prisoner.

Twenty years passed and Lu is finally released.  However, he learns that Feng is suffering from amnesia and remembers very little of her past.

A painful tale of patience, love and sacrifice.  Kind of like the Chinese version of The Notebook, but...  I don't think the ending is as Hollywood.

Sicario

On Saturday, October 10, 2015, I went to see the movie Sicario directed by Denis Villeneuve.  This movie features Emily Blunt, Josh Broslin and Benicio Del Toro.

This movie starts off with the story of Kate Macer, played by Blunt, who is a front line kidnapping resolution agent (she goes into houses and kills the bad people to rescue the good people).  She goes into this house in Arizona to find that there are no hostages...  But a slight accident of someone trying to shoot her with a shot gun uncovers walls of dead and mutilated bodies...

This is a just the tip of the iceberg since the whole story becomes a fast-paced story about people going in against the war of drugs.

A very well directed and acted movie.  I was pleasantly surprised!

Pawn Sacrifice

On Tuesday, October 6, 2015, I went to see the movie Pawn Sacrifice, with Toby McGuire, Liev Schreiber and Peter Sarsgard.  The movie is based upon the life of Bobby Fischer and his match in 1972 against Boris Spassky.

This was a very well done movie where the acting and the directing was very intense.  I really enjoyed this!
