Moana

On Sunday, November 27, 2016, I went to see the movie Moana.  This is the latest Disney animated feature starring the voices of Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, amongst other actors.

The story is about Moana, who is going to be chief of a tribe.  However, since he was little, she was always fascinated by the ocean and when she was young, the ocean chose her.

We also learn at the beginning about the legend of Maui, the demi-god who stole the heart of Te Fiki.  This causes a huge set of problems, including the set of problems that face the island where Moana lives...  The coconuts are rotten on the inside and there are no fish for her people to fish.

Moana finally realizes that it is because there's a negative energy that is scaring away the fish and causing the coconuts to be rotten, so she has to go and find the demi-god Maui, so he can return the heart to Te Fiki.

What happens?  You'll have to watch the movie to find out!

Queen of Katwe

On Monday, Nov. 21, 2016, I went to see the movie Queen of Katwe, featuring David Oyelowo, Lupita Nyong'o and Madina Nalwanga.

The story is based on the true story of Phiona, who was a child prodigy at chess.  At first, she sells vegetables (maize) for her mother to help her pay the rent on their house.  Her mother, who's a widow, is not rich since her husband left her with no money after his death.

Phiona stumbles across a community program that teaches these children to play chess.  And that sparks her interest in chess and starts her on a journey where she could escape poverty.

What follows is as much as a personal journey, as well as a journey with family, a journey of self-discovery, a journey of discovery of the chess world, as well as lessons learned by many people.

I totally enjoyed this movie and I even teared up at the end.  I am not going to give it away, so you'll have to watch the movie to see what I am talking about!

Moonlight

On Tuesday,  November 15, 2016, I went to see the movie Moonlight, featuring Alex R. Hibbert, Ashton Sanders, Trevante Rhodes and Naomie Harris.

The movie is centred around Chiron, our main character.  He's small, he has a mother with a substance-abuse problem, and thus is neglected and is growing up in a rough neighbourhood in Miami, Florida.  The movie looks at three parts of Chiron's life, late childhood, adolescence and adulthood.  There are many issues that are treated in this movie, but one of the big ones is that Chiron is gay.

You'll see how Chiron's sexuality and his experiences shape him into the man that he becomes.

Acting was good, cinematography was rough at times...  I didn't like the ending myself.

On Tuesday, November 1st, 2016, I went to see the movie The Accountant featuring Ben Affleck, Anna Kendrick, J.K. Simmons and John Lithgow.

The story is about our main character, Christian Wolff, who is a high functioning autistic character.  He ended up becoming an accountant, but then assisted with laundering dirty money...

As the Treasury Department starts to close in on him, things happen after he takes on a legit audit job for a state-of-the-art robotics company.

What happens?  You'll have to watch the movie to find out.  A highly enjoyable movie that at first was confusing...  Then at the end, all the ties are explained.
