The Big Sick

On Tuesday, July 18, 2017 I went to see the movie The Big Sick featuring Kumail Nanjiani, Zoe Kazan, Holly Hunter and Ray Ramano.

The movie is about Kumail and Emily (played by Zoe Kazan) who meet under unforeseen circumstances and their relationship blooms.  However, each person has their own demons and secrets and they have to learn to overcome them.

A romantic comedy but done in a slightly different style.  And a very sweet film.

Tom of Finland

On Monday, July 17, 2017 I went to see the movie Tom of Finland at the Fantasia festival.

The movie is about the artist, Tom (of Finland) who was the father of modern gay erotic drawings.

The movie was well done, the story was well written, the acting was great.  It was nice to learn more about that history.

However, I do not really feel that as a visible minority in the gay community or in the leather community, I was represented in that movie.  And I believe that this continues to be a problem in the community now, even though it's been many years.  There is still lots of work to be done.

Our Time Will Come

On Tuesday, July 11, 2017 I went to see the movie Our Time Will Come, a movie directed by Ann Hui.

This movie talks about Japanese occupied Hong Kong in 1941.  We see the Japanese occupation and then guerilla war unit.  The first task we see is rescue of cultural figures from the city.  Fang Lan and her mother are trying to live out this difficult period in a small flat, but Lan gets recruited to join the guerillas.

Lan's mother is worried for her daughter's safety, so she takes her daughter's place as a courrier on the job.  Unfortunately, she gets arrested.

What happens?  You'll have to watch it to find out.  This is not a film with lots of explosions, but with more storyline and contemplation.

A Bag of Marbles (Un Sac de Billes)

On Tuesday, July 4, 2017, I went to see the movie A Bag of Marbles (Un Sac de Billes).  This is a French movie about a Jewish family who lived in Paris and their story during the Nazi occupation.

A really well done movie about the war life in France.  There have been many movies about WWII, but we are now seeing the movies about life in the cities that the movies haven't talked about.
