Bad work ethic...

On Friday, September 26, 2008, I was greeted by bad work ethic at the Concordia Computer Store.

When I went to pick up my computer on Monday, I was told that I get a refund, because there was a price drop on the iPod. So, I thought: "OK, since I have to teach at Concordia at 6:00 p.m., I will drop by at 5:00 p.m., get the refund done, run some errands after, and then go teach."

However, to my dismay, I got to the store at 5:05 p.m., and this was after having rushed from West Island, on bus and then metro, the store was already quite closed, and the cash was "quite closed" as well.

What bugs me is not the fact that I didn't get special treatment. OK, I understand that cashes close, etc. What bugs me is the fact that if they were indeed closed at 5:00 p.m., the stage in which they had their stuff would not be so advanced... I believe that they started closing their store 10 minutes to 5:00 p.m.. Which is unprofessional. I believe that if you say you close at 5:00 p.m., you close your doors at 5:00 p.m., and then you start shutting off the machines, counting cash, etc.

Now, I have to somehow go back next week and get this done. They'd be lucky if they get a smile from me. I don't care that it takes more muscles to frown than to smile.

I am not saying that they had a bad work ethic because I was late. I'm saying that they have a bad work ethic because at 5 minutes past 5 p.m., the store was already quite closed and the people who were working there were almost on the way out. If it had closed at 4:00 p.m., I wouldn't say that they had a work ethic... That would be me not knowing that the store closed at 4:00 p.m...

But weather they closed at 4:50 or at 5, you still wouldn't get in at 5:05, so you shouldn't get so offended. And how do you know it doesn't just take them 5 minutes to close?

Having had friends who work in retail and having done work in customer service... Their experience is that even though it may be a slow day, it takes minimum 15 minutes to close a cash and to shut down a store. However, their experience may just be particular to their cases and it is possible for this store to close in 5 minutes, though it is highly doubtful.

Also, from my experience in customer service, if you do your customer a favour, they remember it for a long time and give you good word of mouth advertisement. It also keeps them coming back to give you repeat business. However, when you offer bad customer service, your customer gives you bad word of mouth advertisement. Unfortunately for the businesses, clients tend to offer about ten times more negative word of mouth advertisement than positive word of mouth advertisement... From my colleagues/friends in business, they have told me that you want to do everything possible to avoid bad publicity. Granted of course this is a computer store close to a university campus, so they probably don't care about bad publicity because the students will still go anyway to get stuff there.

I also don't believe I stated I was offended. I merely noted the fact that I believe the work ethic was poor, because if I had been working there, I would have gone out of my way to help the customer who has traveled a huge distance. But that's just my work ethic.
