I survived my first week...

I am proud to say that I survived my first week of school as a teacher.

I am not so proud to say that my last period today on Friday was a terrible period. I had Grade 10 Science Spiral (Grade 10 students who failed/barely passed Grade 90 science), and I spent 45 minutes trying to get them to sit in their seating plan. It got so bad, the VP came in and talked to them. I wanted to crawl in a hole and die.

Yikes. I hear grade 10s are bad (never had them as a "real" teacher, and I didn't like teaching niners).

Were you 110% prepared for that class? A big chunk of classroom management has to do with your lesson plan preparedness... I admit that in my first yr, I was barely catching up so that sometimes I went in unprepared, and that really did result in a bit of chaos.

You need to explain your expectations step-by-step (don't assume they understand what "respect" means, for example) and tell them what the consequences are for not following procedures... and then you MUST stick to the consequences, otherwise they'll step all over you.

/been there, done that, sending you positive vibes

I was 110% prepared, but it took them 45 minutes to sit in their seating plans, because these students were grade 9 students who failed their grade 9 science, and are put in Grade 10 science that goes slower... They have 1.5 years to do the material in a year. A lot of the problems don't actually stem from science, but more behavioural. They couldn't shut up for five minutes.

Next week, if they don't cooperate, they get sent to the office, it's as simple as that. Even the VP suggested that.
