The Lunch Box
On Tuesday, April 15, 2014, I went to see the movie The Lunchbox, featuring Irrfan Khan and Nimrat Kaur.
Irrfan Khan, who also played as the adult in Life of Pi, plays the character Saajan Fernandes, someone who's close to retiring after 35 years of service in the Indian government. He works in the same office as Ila's (Nimrat Kaur) husband.
It all starts when Ila's lunch box for her husband is incorrectly delivered to Saajan Fernandes who enjoys these lunch boxes. The first day, when Ila's husband, Rajeev, gets home, she asks him what he thought about his lunch. It was when the husband says that the aloo ghobi was very good that we realize (well, the audience and Ila) that the lunch box she makes for her husband is being incorrectly delivered.
The next day, she includes a note with her lunch box. She makes pakora, her husband's favourite, for Saajan... Who only returns a note saying that it was too salty. From this point on, this sparks a series of notes that are left in the lunch box between Saajan and Ila. And as this unfolds we also have other characters and their stories get intertwined... We learn about Ila's husband, we learn about Ila's mother and her father who is dying from lung cancer and we also have Shaikh, who is supposed to take over for Saajan after Saajan's retirement.
What happens? You'll have to watch the movie to find out.
