The Adjustment Bureau

On Tuesday, April 26, 2011, I went to see the movie The Adjustment Bureau featuring Matt Damon and Emily Blunt.

The movie starts off with Matt Damon's character, David Norris, who is being hailed as the youngest candidate ever to win a Senator. It shows him on the campaign trail appealing to the masses and the working class. However, scandals of him getting into a bar fight with someone on his election night as well as him mooning his colleagues as an old college prank. He goes into the bathroom to practice his concession speech, because he is quickly plummeting in the polls.

That is where he meets Emily Blunt's character, Elise Sellers. She is hiding in the bathroom where David Norris was practising his speech and she didn't want to interrupt him or make it known that she was there. They meet briefly and connect.

David Norris gets inspired by Elise and gives one hell of a concession speech, that he didn't stick to the original speech, which gives him a bit of an edge for the next time he was to run for Senator.

Eleven months later, he is taking a bus and meets Elise again. The attraction is there again. However, he was supposed to not have gotten on the bus and have met her again, because he was supposed to have an accident involving coffee by 7:05 a.m.. This didn't happen because the guy that was in charge of causing the accident fell asleep.

This causes David Norris to walk into the office and eventually walking into a board room where everyone is frozen and The Adjustment Bureau are doing their thing.

What happens after? You'll have to watch the movie to find out.

This was a very fast paced film that caught my attention. I really enjoyed it. I also liked all the intricacies of the film.

Unite the Left too?

I stumbled across this link about Canadian politics.

This article is talking about whether or not it is time to merge the left leaning parties in Canada, ever since the merger of the Canadian Alliance and the former Progressive Conservatives.

I certainly hope that this is not the case, because... If the left merges into one party, then essentially we have ended up with the American system. In the United States, we have a two party system: The Republicans and The Democrats.

I believe it was a huge mistake for the right to have merged and I don't want the left to make the same mistake. Not to mention, Liberal members and NDP members (and possibly Green members) would have to work together. There are quite a few Liberal members who can be considered "small cee conservative". I don't think their ideologies match with the NDP.

Goodness, at the rate we are going... Maybe we will start voting for a president too, instead of just voting for a party and then the leader of the party is the Prime Minister.

Fucking lunatics.

Brad Wall, what the fuck are you high on?!!

I came across this article today. It is an article about Premier Brad Wall and his concerns about certain comments that Liberal Party leader, Michael Ignatieff stated.

From the article:

"I am deeply troubled by Mr. Ignatieff’s assertion that he may choose to overturn the democratic result of the federal election," Wall said in the statement.

This is what he was concerned about:

"If the Governor General wants to call on other parties, or myself, for example, to try and form a government, then we try to form a government," Ignatieff told Mansbridge.

And his response:

"The notion that Mr. Ignatieff may choose to not recognize the democratic result of the election and may try to seize power with the support of the other parties, including a party dedicated to the breakup of Canada, is offensive to me and I believe, to most fair-minded Canadians," Wall said.

Premier Brad Wall claims that if the Governor General decides to call upon the opposition leaders to govern, which is well within his/her right if the government fails to obtain the confidence of the house, that he would not be respecting the democratic process of the country...

Canada does not have proportional representation. A riding is won on a first past the post system. If we had proportional representation, then his statement might actually make sense.

In the last election, The Harper government got about 37% of the popular vote... That means that 100 - 37% of the people didn't vote for Harper. My math tells me 63% of the people didn't vote for Harper... So... If the opposition parties were given the opportunity to govern, the combination of seats would actually represent 63% of the country... Which to me seems more democratic than 37%.

Of course, some will say that when the Liberals had a majority government, this was the case as well. And I agree with that... Even when they had a majority, they probably weren't the most representative. However, I do believe that the Liberals respected our democracy just a tad better than the Harper Conservatives. After all, they were not charged with contempt. Harper is the first PM and his government was the first to be charged with contempt.

On another note, I read in the Metro newspaper yesterday a debate, more like a forum, where readers posed questions that were answered by all the leaders. (It was nice of Metro to include Green Party Leader, Elizabeth May) Harper, in one of his answers, blamed the opposition parties for launching this election because they didn't support the budget and that the government fell on a budget vote.

No... The government fell on a non-confidence vote because it has been found of contempt for the first time in Canadian history.

There are people dying in many other countries in the world because they want change, because they want the chance of voting where their ballots actually count. Yet in this country, we have Canadians blindly giving their support to a government that has been found in contempt!

In most other situations, when someone has been found in contempt, they lose their jobs!

Soul Surfer

On Tuesday, April 19, 2011, I went to see the movie Soul Surfer featuring Dennis Quaid, Helen Hunt, Carrie Underwood and AnnaSophia Robb.

The story is based upon Bethanie Hamilton. She is a world famous surfer who was the victim of a shark attack and lost an arm. It tells the story of her struggle to relearn everything and learning how to surf again.

This film also shows the struggle that her family went through and how Jesus helped them through all this.

I had no idea that this family was highly religious...

It was a heartwarming movie. Kevin Sorbo was in it... He was best known for his role in Hercules: The Legendary Journeys in the 90s.

Another Canadian Elections 2011 link

My friend sent me this link. Also interesting.

I still don't understand why Harper has so much support.

Jaloux

On Tuesday, April 12, 2011 I went to see the movie Jaloux.

This is a movie about a couple, Thomas (played by Maxime Denommée) and Marianne (played by Sophie Cadieux). They are a couple who have hit a bit of a plateau in their relationship. Thomas is jealous, even excessively jealous, of Marianne's flirtatious behaviour.

They decide to go away to a chalet for the weekend to try and sort things out. Upon arriving, they meet "Ben", a neighbour, played by Benoît Gouin.

However, Ben is not as he seems. We discover in the movie why and then what happens after.

A bit of a confusing movie to follow, but it's an intellectual movie.

A website to consult before voting

Since the Canadian public seems to be clearly stupid and idiotic and we still have rampant support for Harper who has been found in contempt of parliament... The first time ever in a British commonwealth, I am doing my part to help and make sure that this power seeking, fear mongering, lack of personality, super boring prick does not get re-elected into a majority government.

I urge you... Please please please consult the website: www.projectdemocracy.ca and see which candidate you should support to have the best chance of avoiding a Harper majority.

Limitless

On Tuesday, April 5, 2011, I went to see the movie Limitless. This movie features Bradley Cooper, Abbie Comish and Robert De Niro.

Bradley Cooper plays the character of Eddie Moura, an author who has a bit of writer's block. His life isn't going anywhere and on top of it all, his girlfriend dumps him because she got a promotion at work.

In walks his ex brother in law. He asks Moura to go for a drink and lets him on a secret, a drug that is "FDA approved". Eddie did not want to take the sample, but the brother in law offers it to him, so he does. As he approaches his apartment, he decides, "What the hell" and pops the pill.

He realizes what happens after when you ingest the pill. He writes 90 pages of his book in one setting and the whole nine yards. He decides that he needs more of this drug, so he goes back to see his ex brother-in-law. Eddie was asked to go and pick up dry cleaning and to get some breakfast. When he gets back, he discovered that the place has been ransacked and that the ex brother-in-law has been murdered. He does however stumble across the stash with some cash and a black book of names.

What happens after this? It's an interesting story with a few twists as Eddie Moura learns about the drug, how to use it, what happens, etc.

A very well done action movie. I was engaged for the entire time... What happens? You will have to watch it to find out!
