Classy vs. Not classy

A few months ago, I had a post about my bad news/break-up. To refresh your memory, I was going out with *Orion, and I thought things were going well, but eventually, *Brian, whom Orion was also seeing at the same time, eventually won out.

Today, I saw that *Brian looked at my profile on an online dating site.

Now, the classy thing to do, in my opinion, is even if you still have a profile up on an online dating site, you just avoid the person whom you trampled all over to get into your relationship. Frankly, in my opinion, I would not want to be friends with someone who stole my man from me. It's just not possible.

But now, Brian decided to look at my profile. At least he was smart and didn't e-mail me (IM me) about being friends with me, because I would just ignore that completely.

I guess the 120 hour work weeks are working out. I guess they both have commitment issues.

Another question is, "If you're already in a loving relationship with a great guy.", why do you even still need a online dating profile? You should be meeting friends in other ways.

Yeah, real classy, Brian.

Rachel Getting Married

On Tuesday, October 21, 2008, I went to see the movie Rachel Getting Married. This is a movie where Anne Hathaway plays a model who has just spent nine months in rehab, and she goes home for the weekend, because it's her sister's wedding.

Anne Hathaway plays the sister of Rachel, whose name is Kim. I couldn't determine from the movie which sister was older. Kim gets home just the moment where the wedding preparations are in full swing.

Of course, like many families, there are some problems that surface themselves, and there is also a lack of communication. Kim did not know about a lot of stuff, for example. She knew about her sister getting married, but she didn't know for example that they were going to be living in Hawaii, etc. etc.

It's a very interesting story, and there is a lot that occurs over a weekend, for the weekend. She's certainly got some demons herself (Kim), but she attempts to overcome them.

Hathaway apparently did a lot of research on this role, a role of someone who's dealing with addiction issues and coming out of rehab. I think she gave a very good performance, and maybe she'll get an Oscar nod. However, I don't know if she'll get the Oscar for it.

What bugged me about the wedding is that they had an Indian themed wedding. However, none of the participants were Indian. Rachel's family is white (some German descent, I believe), and Rachel's spouse, his family is black.

I could also just see *Raoul and *Rupert copying this wedding almost word for word... However, since *Rupert doesn't "do" ethnic cuisine, I think we'll be okay. However, copying a wedding in full by whom is just cheesy in any context.

My first jaw dropping response

I recently gave a test to my science class, and I got my first response (I'm sure of many from students) that made me just drop my jaw. I also got a good laugh out of it, but I was just shocked that this answer was actually written.

Here's the question:

In Mr. Wong's Science (code edited) class, he demonstrated the pith ball activity to a student, in order to explain the concept that whenever a charged object is brought towards a neutral object, once it touches, the object that was neutral before is now the same charge as the object used to attract. However, one of his students does not believe him. Please help Mr. Wong explain to the student this concept using some diagrams and short explanations. Assume that the plastic rod has a positive charge.

Here's the answer:

Okay so like we took a piece of plastic and rubbed it with a cloth for like about 10 minutes then we put it over a round plastic container with grains of sand in it then the sand started to move.

I would like to point out that aside from the lack of punctuation, this answer did not even answer the question.

All that's missing in the answer was the "Ready, OK!" and the pom poms before the answer.

Way to go, Canadians...

So, the results of the Canadian elections are in... We have another Conservative minority government.

Way to go Canadians, you voted for a party with no platform, and will put our climate change in jeopardy.

I once saw a really good bumper sticker: "It is only when the last tree has fallen and the last river poisoned and the last fish is eaten that we realize that we cannot eat money."

I hope that you like the taste of Canadian currency, Canadians who voted for Harper, again.

Fortune cookie strikes again...

On a fortune cookie that I got: Depart not from the path which fate has you assigned.

I guess I shouldn't quit teaching, eh? lol

Paris (the film, not the city)

On Tuesday, October 14, 2008, I went to see the movie Paris. This is a French film about a bunch of people whose stories intertwine with each other in the city of Paris.

This was a pseudo art house film, and it's also mixed with a bit of romantic comedy into it.

There are lots of big French stars in it, mainly my favourite: Albert Dupontel. He's got a great range... Dupontel plays a fruit vendor at a market, who's going through a shaky breakup with his ex, who still works at the fruit stand with him. I'm sure that there are lots of other stars who are big in France, but I don't know their work.

This is one of those movies where I will not try to get into the plot, because it's kind of Crash-esque (but with better acting and story line), and the story is about love, more so than about overt racism.

A light movie, a date movie, but definitely not a movie that breaks cinematographic ground.

Lakeview Terrace

On Tuesday October 7, 2008, I went to see the movie Lakeview Terrace featuring Kerry Washington, Samuel L. Jackson and Patrick Wilson.

The film is about a single father, Abel Turner, played by Jackson, who is a cop. He is very strict with his two children, and he is relatively Conservative in his views... One day, he sees a couple moving into the house beside his. From his glimpses, he sees an African American woman, Lisa Mattson, played by Washington, and an older companion whom he assumes is her husband. There's also an American mover, played by Wilson.

Later on in the film, as the older African-American gentleman is taking a phone call, Lisa and the mover (aka the husband) named Chris share an embrace. At this moment, he realizes that the new couple that moved here is a biracial couple.

The story revolves about Turner's conflicts with this couple. The couple does not do anything to provoke Turner, but he just takes offence to many things, and interprets things in different ways than other people do... And eventually, as conflicts escalate, they get resolved, but perhaps not how they should have been resolved.

The movie was enjoyable, although the spectators of this movie were not quiet at all...

The best line from the movie, in my opinion, was delivered by Jackson (Abel Turner), "You know how some friends are in a relationship, and you don't think they should be together, but you just don't tell that to their face?"

Both my friend and I jabbed each other on the arm because we both thought about how this phrase/saying/quote relates to our lives.

Elections Canada 2008

Now that the elections are in full swing... And we'll be hitting the polls in less than two weeks... We need to start thinking about what we're doing...

I was talking to my friend/neighbour *Raoul last night about the elections... The same one who is dating *Rupert.

I didn't ask him whom he was voting for, but I did ask him to tell me, "Anyone but Harper."

The scary thing is, he's actually considering voting for the Conservatives.

There are two things that bug me about this statement:

1) Harper has not unveiled his election platform yet... Why would anyone vote for them if they don't know what he is going to do with our country? What type of leader are we voting for?

2) As a friend told me, which I think has punch. "If you're a gay man and you vote for Harper, that's like being Jewish and voting for Hitler."

Wow, what a comparison! Raoul retorted that Harper didn't reverse the gay marriage law... No, he didn't, but it's not due to lack of trying, that's for sure.
