Her

On Tuesday, January 28, 2014, I went to see the movie Her, featuring Joaquin Phoenix, Amy Adams and Scarlett Johannsen.

The movie is about Theodore Twombly, who is a writer at handwrittenletters.com.  He is an author there to write letters that are asked of him by people.  Essentially, he is a scribe with feeling for people.

He goes around doing his business and according to the front desk clerk, Theodore is the best author in the whole business.  Of course, Theodore being so humble, he just takes it in stride.

We learn that Theodore has been through a divorce and he is kind of hurt by it.  He has been dragging his heels with the signing of the divorce papers to officialize it.  We also learn that Theodore is a gadgetty kind of guy.  He has a phone with an OS which he just uses his voice to do things (of course - that seems to be the way of the world in this story) and he sees the advertisement for a brand new OS, which personalizes itself to the user.  We see him install this OS to his computer and after a few initial questions, the OS is personalized to him...  The OS, voiced by Scarlett Johannsen, is named Samantha.

At first, Samantha is just an OS, doing OS things.  However, as the movie progresses, it evolves into something more than an OS...

What happens in the end?  You'll have to watch the movie to find out.  However, it certainly raises some very good points.

Although, I personally only thought that this movie was okay.  I thought it was going to be good, but it's only okay.  I guess it was too hyped up.

Frozen

On Tuesday, January 21, 2014, I went to see the movie Frozen.  I watched the movie in 3D, although I don't feel that you needed to do so.

The movie is about two sisters, Elsa and Ana, who live in the kingdom of Arendelle.  Ana is always cheerful and wanting to play and Elsa has the power to create ice, snow and cold.  She plays with Ana by creating snow so that they can build a snowman indoors.  Ana also starts to run around on mountains of snow and then as she gets more and more excited, Elsa cannot keep up with catching her sister's steps.  She eventually slips on a patch of ice she created and hits her sister with an ice beam in her head.

The family takes Ana into a field of trolls who have the power to help Ana.  The Troll King, Pabbie, helps Ana by removing all memories of magic, but not the sentiments of fun related to it.  It was the only way to save Ana.

After this incident, Elsa completely isolates herself from her family and especially from Ana...  To protect her, for her own good.  It is also during this time that their parents die in a storm, so the sisters are indeed truly alone.

Eventually, coronation day comes for Elsa and Ana is very excited.  However, an event causes Elsa to lose control of her powers and freeze practically everything, changing Arendelle into a land of perpetual winter.

What happens in the rest of the movie?  You'll have to watch it to find out!

Dallas Buyers' Club

On Tuesday, January 14, 2013, I went to see the movie Dallas Buyers Club featuring Matthew McConaughey, Jennifer Gardner and Jared Lato.

This movie is about an electrician and part-time rodeo cowboy, Ron Woodroof, who gets diagnosed with HIV.  At first, he does not believe it, because he is pretty straight arrow.  He then decides to do a bit of reading about HIV and finally accepts that it's something that he will have to live with.

After the acceptance of his HIV, he decides to make a bit of money by offering other people who have the same condition as him a chance at other medicines that are approved to be used in other parts of the world, but not by the FDA.

What happens in the movie?  You'll have to watch it to find it.  It is inspired by true events, but certain things have been dramatized for the big screen.  It was also written by Jean-Marc VallĂ©e, who was responsible for C.R.A.Z.Y..

Anchorman 2

On Wednesday, January 8, 2014, I went to see the movie Anchorman 2.  The movie features Will Farrell, Steve Carell, Paul Rudd, James Marsden and a whole bunch of well known comedians that I will not name here.

This movie continues with the character played by Will Farrell, Ron Burgundy and his wife who are newscasters.  It all goes awry when his wife gets promoted and he gets fired.

What happens?  You'll have to watch the movie to find out.

Although, I personally don't really like Will Farrell and his sense of comedy, so I would not really recommend anyone seeing this movie.

Saving Mr. Banks

On Tuesday, January 7, 2014, I went to see the movie Saving Mr. Banks.  This movie features Tom Hanks, Paul Giamatti, Colin Firth and Emma Thompson.

Emma Thompson plays P.L. Travers, the author of the Mary Poppins books.  She is practically bankrupt, so she decides to take Walt Disney's offer on selling him the rights to her book.  But only after she has had final say on the movie and the script.

When she finally goes to Los Angeles for two weeks, Walt Disney pulls out all the stops to try and get her to sign over the rights. A good movie that shows the behind the scenes on how the modern Mary Poppins came to play.

American Hustle

On Thursday, January 2, 2014, I went to see the movie American Hustle featuring Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, Amy Adams, Jennifer Lawrence, Jeremy Renner and Robert DeNiro.

The movie is about Irving Rosenfeld, played by Christian Bale, who is a con man as a living, who nearly gets caught by the FBI for fraud.  He was partnered with Sydney Prosser, who was his partner in fraud.  Rosenfeld also has a wife and a child as well, although they were not directly involved with fraud.  The way out is for them to work with Richie DiMaso, an FBI agent played by Bradley Cooper.

Bradley Cooper has a big vision and tries to use them to nab people who are corrupt.  However, because he's such an optimist and a dreamer, he decides to catch bigger and bigger fish, which include politicians, senators and people in the mob.

What happens at the end?  How does Jennifer Lawrence's role come into play?  You'll have to watch the movie to find out.
